“Youth” by Samuel Ullman

“Youth” by Samuel Ullman

I must share something here that goes along perfectly with my whole website theme of Renewing Youth.  This poem was written by Samuel Ullman (April 13, 1840 – March 21, 1924) who was an American businessman, poet, and humanitarian. He is best known today for this poem called “Youth” which was a favorite of General Douglas MacArthur.

by Samuel Ullman

“Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.

Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite, for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of sixty more than a boy of twenty. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.

Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.

Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every human being’s heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing child-like appetite of what’s next, and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station; so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the infinite, so long are you young.

When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at twenty, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch the waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at eighty.”

I hope you enjoyed the wisdom of this famous man. There is a museum at UAB in Birmingham, Alabama dedicated to him. If you’d like to learn more about the wonderful man who wrote such a wide reaching poem, here’s a link to a short but interesting bio about Mr. Ullman:

Get Rid of Dry Skin and Tame Oily Skin

Get Rid of Dry Skin and Tame Oily Skin

Most of us have dealt with skin issues during our life, right? We all have one thing in common, and that is our epidermis, our skin. Some of us have been blessed with a flawless smooth complexion, others like myself have fought the battle of the skin for a very long time.

So let’s talk about that battle. Have you had blemishes and/or acne as a youth? Or did it show up in your adult years? I personally had a few blemishes as a teenager, but then serious acne set in during my late 20’s and I still battle it now in my 60’s. Ugh!

If you are in your 40’s, 50’s and above, remember you are like fine wine whose content grows better with age, but sometimes the bottles need a bit of tending to. In our case, aging can be more than just genetic. Only 20% of skin aging comes from genetics. The other 80% comes from our environment  and can lead to premature aging.

I know what it’s like to deal with dry skin along with acne flare ups. I know how it feels to wish I could take sandpaper to my face and start over, like I did to a scratched up wooden dresser. The dresser turned out gorgeous by the way!

But alas! There’s hope!

Rough dry skin is usually caused by a build-up of dead skin cells plus a lack of hydration.  In my case, I have oily skin in some places and dry skin in others, so I’m dealing with that dry flaky stuff that makes my makeup look like a drunk applied it, plus having that shiny, melted off makeup look caused by excess oil in other areas of my face. Does anyone else relate?

Bottom line is that having this means using the right products on my face is critical.

Did I find a solution? You bet I did! I treat each area individually using high quality products. I’m sure you’ve heard many women say they use Brand X found at discount stores, which is great if they don’t have the problems I mentioned that I have. I ended up with a drawer full of Brand X’s and never found a solution to my skin problems. Through trial and lots of errors, I learned what does and does not work for me.

First of all, I found it essential to use a mask twice a week to remove those pesky dead skin cells that ALL of us shed a couple of times a week. Then I follow up with TWO hydrating moisturizers. One is formulated specifically for combination to oily skin, and the other is for normal to dry skin. Why do I use 2 moisturizers? Because my forehead, the area around my eyes and mouth, my neck and upper chest tend to show more dryness, hence wrinkles (ugh!). My cheeks and nose have larger pores and are oilier, so using a more luxuriant moisturizer there would increase the hydration level, bringing on those dreaded clogged pores and blemishes.

If you have any of these skin issues that I mentioned, take heart. There is an answer. Drop me a line and let me know what you’re dealing with as far as skin care needs, and let’s talk!

To Your Youthfulness!

What are K-Beauty Sheet Masks?

What are K-Beauty Sheet Masks?

Korean Bio-Cellulose Mask – What is it?

There is a hot new trend from the world of K-Beauty called sheet masks. These come in various materials and are gaining a huge fan base around the world as an added boost to a woman’s daily skin care routine.

Yes, that’s me in the photos you see here. We wouldn’t want to talk about something we haven’t tried, would we? I tried this product and I’m hooked! Here’s all the interesting facts about sheet masks and why you might just want to give them a try!

The latest in K-Beauty technology is called a bio-cellulose sheet mask. It’s a very exciting new addition to any woman’s skin care regimen and is for today’s woman who truly wants to take care of her skin.  Studies show this mask may visibly lift and firm our skin in just a few weeks and leave it visibly more radiant, even after the very first use. Wow! This innovative beauty-booster could very well be a very important uplifting experience that today’s busy women have come to crave.

There are many new sheet masks available now. The Bio-cellulose is one I totally recommend because it is a pure, plant-based material derived from coconut water. Its interlocking fibers form a highly absorbent, three-dimensional “fabric,” allowing the mask to be generously infused with a complex of beneficial ingredients. This complex may include oat kernel extract, orchid extract and sodium hyaluronate*, which is known for its skin-conditioning benefits. You want to look for a flexible material that gives a Bio-Cellulose Mask its unique, face-hugging fit, keeping skin in close contact with all the ingredients. It is recommended you keep it on your face for 20 to 30 minutes.

*Sodium hyaluronate is the sodium salt of hyaluronic acid, a “glycosaminoglycan” found in various connective tissue of humans. Glycosaminoglycan is a group of compounds occurring mainly as components of our connective tissue. These are called complex polysaccharides, which are carbohydrates like starch, cellulose, or glycogen. (Science and technology at work in our skin care. Whew! Glad we cleared that one up!) Seriously though, the new scientific break-throughs in the skin care industry are amazing.

In a recent research study, after two weeks of use, the majority of women who tried a quality bio-cellulose mask agreed that their skin looked lifted, firmed, younger-looking, and appeared more luminous. And after four weeks of use, the women agreed that the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles was reduced. (These results were based on a four-week independent consumer study in which 300 women used the product twice a week.)

The best candidate for this mask is any woman who is seeing the advanced signs of aging and looking for the benefits this mask can provide. Well, that’s me for sure! It’s also good for someone who wants an intensive, twice-weekly facial treatment that gives visible lifting and firming benefits. Women who are currently using good skin care may be interested in giving their existing regimen a “beauty boost”. And this is definitely a great idea for any woman who wants to look her best for that important upcoming event!

This new technology can be a bit pricey, but after I tried it just one time, I was hooked! As you can see in the photos, my skin had a nice glow and looked and felt softer, and that was after my very first use! Not bad for this 68-year-old grannie, right?
